Ways to boost Immunity Our immune systems are critical to help us fight off illness and infection and keep us healthy and happy. But amidst modern day disadvantages of stress, pollution and poor diets (to name but a few) taking their toll on immunity, here are some suggestions to help give it a boost. Food You are what you......know the rest! Time to detox the system. So it's out with the chocolate and caffeine and in with the good stuff. Try Fresh vegetables and go green (try Kale and spinach) and steam them to get the best from the nutrients. Also incorporate raw vegetables into your daily diet. Try light and low fat proteins, tofu based dishes and white fish. Exercise Get moving! There is no end to the benefits and we can all work to our own level and pace. Exercise gets the circulation moving which helps carry oxygen and white blood cells around our bodies which are vital to fight off infection. Poor circulation also leads to high blood pressure which is a factor in lowering immunity. Perhaps try a beginners Hatha Yoga class which incorporates gentle stretching and controlled breathing exercises. Vitamins and Herbs How many of us hit the Vitamin C supplements whenever we feel the onset of a nasty cold? Try Echinacea a type of flower of which the root, stem and flower are used to create a supplement which can be taken in power, pill or liquid form. It is thought to help boost immunity and is recommended by experts to be taken to hopefully stop a cold in its tracks and even lessen the duration of illness. Echinacea can be found in teas also. We especially like the fruity taste of raspberry and Echinacea tea. Probiotics are good for immunity Often referred to as friendly or good bacteria living in our intestinal tracts. They ward off pathogens which are harmful organisms in our bodies, whilst helping to up the level of good bacteria in our body especially if they are low i.e. after a course of antibiotics. The friendlys fight off the bad bacteria which can cause infection in the bowels. They keep the intestines healthy and functioning properly. A quick fix and popular source of probiotics is live yogurts, or dairy based drinks which taken on a regular basis help keep up levels of good bacteria. De-stress and relax A sudden stressful event or a prolonged build up of stress over time can negatively effect your Immune system. So Cheer up! Easier said than done. If only we could flick a switch and release all those happy chemicals in our brains and alleviate the nasty moods and help ease tensions and stress within the body. So even if you feel all hope is lost, take a moment and indulge in a nice memory and you may even catch yourself smiling. |
